Yes! Over 50,000 words written in November, to win NaNoWriMo for 2015.
National Novel Writing Month is a self challenge. In the end, it’s just me, committing myself to getting the barest of bones of a novel onto paper. Although with support from thousands of people worldwide. Which is what I love about NaNo, it’s truly international.
As in 2014, it was a great opportunity to take the kernel of an idea and run with different aspects of it. There are more directions that I want to explore, and without the time pressure I’m going to read what I’ve written, rearrange it into a beginning, middle and end (I never write in a linear fashion), and see if I have a story. And then see what it needs to become a better story.
I find it really difficult not to edit as I go, and did a bit more of that this year than last. Hopefully that means ‘Angels Above and Below’ won’t take as long to finish off as ‘Born in the USA’ did. But now, I need to put it away for a while and come back to it cold. See what’s worth keeping and what was just my fingers working without engaging my brain. I think there’s the potential for a good story in there somewhere. Now I just have to pull it to bits and put it back together to find it!
