Julia at http://www.juliasplace.org.uk gave us a tough prompt this week, with
…the howling dog, the moon and the creaking boards made for …
Maybe because it was a longer phrase. But I loved the challenge anyway. Here’s my attempt:
I picked them up. Sneaked a look. Swallowed so loudly that I’m sure everyone heard.
I tried not to look around. My face would have given me away if I had.
The howling dog, the moon and the creaking boards made for a poor hand. Chances are they weren’t going to be good enough.
But I laid them down anyway to join Mr Bun the Baker.
Maisie fixed me with a steely look as only a six year old can. “Daddy, I know it’s Halloween but why can’t we play Happy Families with the normal cards?”
Ha ha, very exciting at first and then just Daddy playing a game! Love it

Hi Julia, I live near Brighton. You can get ANYTHING in the shops there!

Dammit woman! I cannot get enough of your short proses. I never EVER foresee the clever endings.

Thanks Liliy. I like writing twists. Or am I just twisted. The jury is out …
